Hello friends and family!
Welcome to my Blog! First, I just want to thank my cousins Fritz and Taage for introducing me to a blog and to my class on The Internet and Intercultural Marketing Communication, which helped me decide to really do this. I know it is something I should have started 8 months ago, when I first arrived in Denmark, but it is sometimes hard to sit down and write and send pictures. I can't promise that I will write often in this blog, but I will try my best, and what better way to procrastinate!
As many of you already know, I have been in Denmark the past 8 months studying in the masters program of Culture, Communication, and Globalization (International Studies) at Aalborg University. I am currently in the 2nd of 4 semesters in the program. After I complete this semester, I will start on an internship, hopefully in Denmark, and then my final semester will be all thesis writing.
After finishing this week, we will be half way through our two months of classes and lectures. The semester is split up with 2 months of classes and then almost 2 months of project writing. Our project in this semester must be turned in on December 20th and then the exam, or our defense of our project, will be in mid to late January. Aalborg U is very unique in the sense that they encourage and are famous for their group project writing. I had never worked in a group to write such a long paper...it turned out to be 60 pages on the construction of identity through internet message boards. It was quite a new experience to defend a project, which I did last semester with my two group partners: Martin and Lars. We met in a room with our supervisor and a censor. We gave an introduction to our project and then we proceeded to discuss and defend the project with questions asked by the supervisor and censor. I admit I was a bit nervous about the process, but felt much better about the fact that Martin and Lars had been through it many times and knew it was really not that bad. They were right and we were graded quite well!
Now, the new semester is in full swing and I must write another project. I enjoyed group work so much that I would have loved to work again in the same way, but alas I will be back in the USA for nearly two months and I am forced to work alone and keep myself on track with getting research done and intros and conclusions written and revised. I know it will be much easier after the great guidance I got from Martin and Lars. So, I hope I can start ASAP and have most of the worries out of the way once I leave for the US.
Otherwise, things are going well socially. It was quite lonley during the summer with all my international friends moved back home, but now I have met a great group of friends in my CCG program. I have pleased them with my baking abilities...trying new recipes for apple cakes, carrot cakes, rhubarb cakes, and everyone loves the oatmeal cookies I make...I am out of semi-sweet chocolate chips. My friends, Marieke from Holland and Gosia from Poland, especially, and I enjoy getting together for a cup of tea and talking about lots of different stuff. Sometimes we meet at the Studenterhuset (the Student House) and hang with the other international students. Or on some nights, like last Saturday nigth, we were at Aalborg's famous Jomfrue Ane Gade. A walking street with nothing but pubs, bars, and discos, and nice restaurants during the day. I had a great time on Saturday and didn't spend a dime! (or a kroner) We were handed a free beer ticket when we walked through the door and enjoyed the air conditioned dance floor for hours!
Anyway, I know if I write too much it is not so easy to read, so I will log off my blog for now with a warm hug to you all! Please feel free to comment and I wll try to place some pictures in my blog as soon as I figure out how!
