Kristi himmelFARTSdag
There seems to be so much happening today! First, today is an official holiday for Denmark, so nothing is open. For people who aren't very religious, they do a good job at exploiting religious holidays and traditions. Today, Denmark is celebrating "Kristi Himmelfartsdag" or the day that Christ went to heaven. I personally find it amazing that this is a holiday...including the Danish holiday "store bededag" (on April 22nd), which means 'big prayer day'. America's holidays of Presidents Day and Memorial Day make a lot more sense to me...they are actually factual events that we are celebrating (no offense to the religious believers). I am just fine celebrating Easter and Christmas in honor of religion.... :)
Today is also the 60th anniversary of Denmark's independance from Germany's occupation during World War II. This is not normally a day taken free, however.
Today, the 5th of May, is also Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican holiday, which I know nothing about. But I am sure it is a great day to celebrate by eating burritos, tacos...or tortilla-less fajitas like I myself enjoyed for dinner! Muchos buenos! :)
And, of course, it is my cute little second cousin Lyvia's birthday today! She turns 2 years old back home in Washington! Tillykke til Lyvia!
Also, I think it is a special day because it is 5-5-05 today!
I also fixed my rusty bike chain on my bike thanks to the guidance of my neighbor. I had to go through each joint, one by one, and loosen it up with some plyers...I definately learned my lesson about letting a bike sit out in the weather without taking care that it gets properly greased up.
And tomorrow...I'm heading back to Copenhagen! I know I was just there, but there is a lot going on this weekend over there! I was invited by Martin to come back to Copenhagen so that I could see his cousin's band perform at Tivoli tomorrow night and in Roskilde on Saturday night. This band, according to Martin, is one of the most well know bands in Greenland right now! I have heard one of their cd's and I think it is great...although I can't understand any of the Greenlandic language! I look forward to seeing them perform!
And things are finally turning green in Denmark! Last weekend was warm, and all the plants took advantage of that and sprung into action! I love green and it is so lovely to see leaves again!
